John Mellors started Da-Mell Air Conditioning & Heating in 1970 at his home in Emu Plains.

He was working for someone else at the time and decided he had more to offer the community by going out on his own.

Mr Mellors moved the business to the land now occupied by Nepean Village in Station Street, Penrith a few years later.

Then when construction began on the shopping centre the company moved again to Peachtree Road, Penrith where it stayed for 26 years, before finally relocating to Emu Heights in 2008.

The business specialises in the sales, service and installation of air conditioners and gas central heaters.

General manager Tania Pearce said they had expanded over the years to meet the needs of the growing community. Three generations of the family now work there.

"John's daughter Tania joined the business in 1990 and now owns half," Ms Pearce said.

"We started off in air conditioning and became trained in gas central heating when natural gas became available in the Blue Mountains in the early 90s."

Ms Pearce said people would probably remember the Da-mell name because back in the early days of the business John would use helicopters to put air conditioning units in place for large commercial jobs, instead of the crane that is used today.

She said Da-mell was quite unique in that they had been trading for 49 years under the one owner.

"And we're thankful for all our customers who have been part of this journey," she said.

"Because is a family business we go the extra mile to ensure that we meet John's promise to the customer that they will always be completely satisfied.

"We also believe in heavily supporting the community that has always supported us.

"We sponsor Greystanes Disability Services in the Blue Mountains and the Mama Lana's Foundation, a charity that helps homeless people."
