Wind gusts of nearly 100 km/h kept the emergency personnel busy over the weekend.
SES volunteers responded to 120 calls for help as the weather turned from Friday's balmy 23 degrees to mid-winter levels, with a top of just 5 degrees on Saturday and ambient temperatures as low as minus nine.
A 35-metre pine tree was uprooted and fell onto a house in Cross St, Blackheath.
"If was lucky no one was home," said John Hughes, unit commander for the NSW SES.
"The tree basically cut the house into two, completely destroying the structure and damaged the neighbours roof."
At Springwood, winds lifted the roof of a shop in Macquarie Road. Fire and Rescue NSW attended with SES after concerns were raised (but later allayed) about asbestos. A ladder appliance was sent from Parramatta to give access to the roof line.
Mr Hughes said volunteers with the Rural Fire Service, police, council workers and Endeavour Energy also helped with some of the emergency calls.
