Megalong Books and Silk's Brasserie host first literary dinner - TV chef Matthew Evans of Fat Pig Farm

Megalong Books in conjunction with Silk's Brasserie in Leura will hold their first literary dinner - an event with renowned Tasmanian chef, farmer and author Matthew Evans.

The event is on Tuesday October 29 to celebrate Evan's new book The Commons.

In The Commons, a book inspired by the hit SBS television show Gourmet Farmer, chef and writer Matthew Evans captures Fat Pig Farm's year of growing, cooking and feasting.

Part how-to, part journal, part cookbook (with more than 100 recipes), The Commons rejoices the seasons and transforming good produce into remarkable dishes.

In each chapter Evans paints an evocative picture of life on Fat Pig Farm in Tasmania's picturesque Huon Valley, sharing the joys and challenges.

In winter we look forward to the last of the roasted carrots, parsnips and brussels sprouts, with classic recipes like caramelised brussels sprouts with prosciutto, and hearty, comforting dishes including beef brisket with mustard and beer and beef cheek pie. As we move through spring the greens sprout and we start to think about lamb, inspiring recipes for light and fresh haloumi with broad beans, mint and lemon to warming lamb and broad bean cassoulet.

Whatever the season The Commons is the perfect inspiration for those about to embark on a simpler life, a handy reference for those who already have done just that, and a solution for those who just want to dream the dream without leaving home.

Matthew Evans co-owns Fat Pig Farm with partner Sadie Chrestman. The 70 acre mixed holding grows food for their on-farm restaurant in Southern Tasmania. A chef by trade, he's fronted six series of Gourmet Farmer on SBS TV, along with documentaries What's the Catch and For the Love of Meat.

For the last two decades he's written for magazines, newspapers and guide books and is the author of a dozen books on food, as well as two memoirs. When he's not writing or cooking, Evans fattens pigs, helps tend a garden, home-brews cider and milks two full cream dairy cows.

The cost of the dinner is $80 per person for a three course set menu plus drinks.
