BANC Fitness and Walks (BANCFW) is a new, free, weekly yoga and walking program in Blackheath for men and women aged over 60.
BANCFW will be run by the Blackheath Area Neighbourhood Centre (BANC), Blackheath Yoga Studios and physiowalks.com.
Dr Andrey Zheluk, from physiowalks.com described the aims of the BANC Fitness and Walks program.
"Above all, moving just refreshes you. But there's more to moving. Walking, strength and balance are the keys to living happily in your own home as you get older. The BANCFW program aims to open up these options for you," said Dr Zheluk.
"We'll be running free yoga and walking sessions on alternate Fridays at 10.30am at BANC in Blackheath from November 16. We've also got a Facebook page at facebook.com\bancfw."
Dr Zheluk is a health academic and a physiotherapist.
"I'll be leading the walks and the short science-based health talks after the walks. The yoga classes will be led by a local Iyengar-style yoga teacher from Blackheath Yoga Studios," said Dr Zheluk.
"You can can come just to the walk weeks, just to yoga, or both. You should be able to get up and down off the floor with the help of a chair, and able to comfortably walk for at least 30 minutes. We're encouraging people to come with a friend. And we're encouraging referrals from families, carers, GPs, pharmacists and allied health professionals."
Yoga and walks are on alternate weeks at BANC, Gardiner Crescent, Blackheath, at 10:30am every Friday from November 16. Contact bancfw@physiowalks.com, phone 0490 207 235 or just turn up.
BANCFW is funded by a grant from Musculoskeletal Australia.
