Is your home feeling blue? How to decorate with this cool shade.

There are a number of ways to embrace the elegance of classic blue throughout different rooms in the home. One of Porter Davis Homes' lead interior designers, Stephanie Atanasovski has this advice on how to work with this cool shade.

Bedroom

Classic blue provides peace and tranquility to the human spirit, offering refuge thus making it the perfect accent to any bedroom. Blues are such a versatile hue and with a shade like classic blue, you can opt for as little or as much as you like. Rich linens and bed dressings in vivid blue perfectly complement neutral tones and can add a nautical element to the bedroom. Blue feature walls can work to create a deeper mood within the space and allow metallic furnishings to pop. Blue furnishings, such as throw pillows and blankets are easily paired with neutral (tan, white and stone) colour schemes or can work with brighter sunset tones (apricot, lemon and pinks).

Bathroom

With blue having such a natural connection to water and the ocean, it can make a seamless addition to bathrooms of all sizes. Play into the resort style by pairing classic blue with natural fibres such as rattan and jute, or opt for a contemporary finish with a metallic or matted gold accents. Blue tiling options are another way to add a Mediterranean feel within the bathroom. Whether it is through a mosaic style tiling patterns on the walls or large scale geometric floor tiles, the inclusion of the classic blue colour scheme will serve to create a spa-like experience at home. White furnishings particularly benefit from a pop of classic blue to bring out the brilliance in their shade.

Kitchen/living areas

It is said that classic blue facilitates 'relaxed interaction', meaning it is the perfect hue for living and entertaining areas. While classic blue is a fantastic shade for final-touch styling items like vases, throws, pillows and candles, be sure to not limit your blue accents only through furnishings. For a bold statement, you can incorporate blue within your kitchen fit outs such as island benches or darker toned feature walls within living areas. With classic blue described as being 'suggestive of the sky at dusk', draw inspiration from surrounding nature with moody and mature floral choices and luxurious textures such as silk or velvet. Choosing the different forms of lighting when using classic blue can also bring out it's different qualities. A softer downlight will bring out the more muted elements, while lighter hanging light fixtures constructed from natural-fibres will create the ultimate holiday haven at home.
