Golfers threw their support behind the Springwood Hospital Charity Golf Day this year, raising more than $16,000 and making it one of the most successful fundraisers in years.
The team of volunteers from Springwood Country Club, led by Graham Wass, the golf day co-ordinator, contacted local businesses and were overwhelmed with the support they received in sponsorship and gifts.
The day itself was a great success. After days of wet weather, golfers woke to see a clear blue sunny sky and at 6.15am. Volunteers from the club and hospital auxiliary, led by the auxiliary president Richard Jackson-Hope, began erecting tents and preparing barbecues for 144 golfers.
Sponsor signs lined the driveway for 150 metres such was the level of commitment that greeted the golfers as they drove in.
"The atmosphere was one of fun and anticipation of a great day. The course was filled to capacity with both experienced and new players ready to have fun and spend a bit of money in support of the hospital," said an event spokesman.
With two teams on every tee, the four ball ambrose competition was commenced with a shotgun start. When the players finished they retired to the clubhouse to enjoy a buffet lunch served by the 19th restaurant.
Prior to the presentations there was some exciting bidding for many of the sponsors donations. Between the auction, the silent auction, raffles and the golf, more than $16,000 was raised. This was the largest amount ever raised by the hospital auxiliary for any one function.
On the day the stand-out winners were Winmalee Carpentry who took out the corporate prize - a sailing cruise on Sydney Harbour with net 491/2. The Cabban Construction team came in with net 521/2 taking the first team prize. Jake Minney took the longest drive while Warrimoo Kitchens, J. Kavana, O. Schulze, T. Khanna, A McKracken and R. Malony enjoyed the nearest the pin prizes.
The hospital fete is the other major fundraiser the committee relies on, had to be cancelled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But money raised from the golf day will allow the purchase of three high-tech beds for the hospital.
Officially opened on March 1, 1976, Springwood Hospital originally operated as an extension of services at Nepean Hospital, offering general medical and surgical care. The community-based hospital now specialises in geriatric, rehabilitative and palliative inpatient car and day surgery.
Springwood Hospital has 32 beds, five of which are designated as day only surgery beds. The theatre is fully equipped and provides surgery in a number of specialities including ophthalmology, gynaecology, urology and general surgery.
Integral to the hospital's success, the Springwood Hospital Auxiliary's ongoing fundraising efforts have helped to fund medical equipment and patient comfort and care items for the benefit of patients.
Volunteers from both Springwood Country Club and the Hospital Auxiliary have worked over the past year to raise awareness for the hospital and would like to acknowledge the many sponsors and businesses who donated prizes for the golf day.
The fundraiser was held in March before social isolating restrictions came into force.
