Event organisers posted on their UTA Facebook page on September 3, that the planned October 22-25 event in the Blue Mountains would not be going ahead due to coronavirus restrictions.
"Current New South Wales restrictions limit events to 500, and these are not going to be reviewed again until the end of September. Under these restrictions unfortunately the event cannot proceed and with still no certainty on when these restrictions will ease, we regret to advise you that Ultra-Trail Australia cannot take place as planned on 22 - 25 October 2020," they posted.
The massive event held each year in May, brings thousands of runners and their families from Australia and internationally to the Blue Mountains every year. In March, as the coronavirus pandemic was unfolding in Australia, organisers decided to postpone the event until October.
The event has been run by the Ironman Group since 2018, and was built up to its prestigious international standing by AROC Sport. Organisers acknowledged the latest announcement would be disappointing for many.
"We know this will bring on a mix of emotions, some of you will be disappointed by this news and others will understandably be relieved to have some certainty. Please know that our team are gutted. We've put a huge amount of work into trying to make the 2020 event happen and were really looking forward to seeing you back doing what you love," they posted on Facebook.
They plan to come back stronger than ever in 2021.
