A Queensland doctor who digitally raped a woman after a medical procedure has been sentenced to 20 months' imprisonment.
Dr Olajide Olusesan Ogunseye denied sexually assaulting and trying to kiss the woman at his Hervey Bay business in 2018 but was found guilty by a jury.
The 53-year-old was sentenced in the Brisbane District Court on Tuesday to 20 months' imprisonment, to be suspended after eight months in custody.
Ogunseye penetrated the woman's vagina with one or more fingers after doing a pap smear on October 4 before trying to kiss her on the mouth.
When she sat up and got dressed, the GP apologised and tried to hug her before she left the room.
Defence barrister Angus Edwards said Ogunseye made a "brief but critical error" and faces an inevitable period of suspension which will affect his ability to practise medicine.
"Otherwise he is a man of excellent character," Mr Edwards said.
"It was a brief touching in the context of a man who is highly respected and on all accounts, an excellent doctor."
When sentencing him, Judge Nathan Jarro said the rape was "opportunistic".
"The digital rape was not a violent penetration and caused the complainant no immediate distress. However, she has clearly suffered emotionally and financially," Judge Jarro said.
"In my view, there was a gross breach of trust implicit in a doctor and patient relationship, and clearly an offence of this kind undermines public confidence in the medical profession."
