Katoomba-based tool and equipment library, Toolo, ran full throttle during the tough times in 2020 and the growth in demand continues.
Library co-ordinator Kathleen MacDonald said, "We had a sharp increase in loans during lockdown, as more people were based at home and had time to attend to home projects and repairs."
As well as tools, Toolo loaned its projector to families watching movies at home and gardening equipment for those who couldn't afford their own mower and other gear.
Ms MacDonald said that as more people moved to working from home or realised they wanted more green space for their kids, Toolo also saw an increase in members who were 'COVID-refugees' from the Sydney area.
"We started seeing shifts in memberships in 2020. We saw a significant increase in concession memberships from just over 25 per cent of our members to more than 40 per cent, as more people started struggling financially."
"More members are also opting to pay monthly rather than one annual fee, to manage their budgets. Families can't afford to fill a whole shed with stuff or to buy something they'll only use once or twice."
Toolo also runs a Repair Cafe on the third Saturday every month and has seen more people try to repair equipment to save money.
"Some of these people can't even afford a Toolo membership, which is only the cost of one small power tool", Ms MacDonald added,
"I think we're seeing a move towards making things last, not only because it's good for the environment, but out of sheer necessity."
Toolo is an independent, not-for-profit charity that relies solely on paid memberships and community grants for funding, as well as volunteer help. They have 107 members and the numbers remained relatively steady during the pandemic
The library is at 142 Katoomba St, Katoomba, behind the Uniting Church. It is open Thursdays 3-6pm and Saturdays 9am- 1pm.
