Land slips and localised flooding closed roads, the SES answered more than 160 calls for help and two bushwalkers had to be rescued in Katoomba as rain pelted the Mountains.
Almost 300mm of rain fell between Saturday and Monday, not quite eclipsing the 365mm which fell over three days in February last year. At Katoomba, 168mm fell on Sunday; at Mt Boyce, it was 111mm.
An incredible 454mm has fallen at Mt Boyce in the first 22 days of March, with it continuing yesterday. The average for the month is 119mm.
John Hughes, Blue Mountains SES unit commander, said they had responded to 165 calls by lunchtime on Monday, mostly flooding or water entering properties.
"We have had 66 volunteers of the Blue Mountains Unit active in the last week responding to all these calls. We have also provided flood rescue responders to the Penrith area during the heighten danger over the weekend and two storm teams have assisted Hawkesbury unit in the North Richmond area as that is now isolated due to the river height."
Roads were closed or partially blocked on Victoria Pass, Bells Line of Road at Mt Tomah, Gardiner Crescent, Blackheath, Springwood Rd at Yarramundi Bridge and the Megalong Rd near Shipley.
The Megalong Rd is the only access road into the valley and had caused the SES "great concern", Mr Hughes said.
"We are currently working with council and the other emergency services on this to assist the residents in Megalong Valley to provide emergency support into the area until the road can be repaired."
The SES also provided sand and bags at its Katoomba and Faulconbridge stations - bring your own shovel. Mr Hughes said they had gone through 70 tonnes of sand.
On Saturday, police rescued a 39-year-old woman from Coogee and a 32-year-old woman from Clovelly who had been walking along the Six Foot Track towards the Marked Tree.
At Nellies Glen, they negotiated a river crossing but then found the track further down cut off by a large flowing waterfall. They couldn't back track across the river which had swollen, leaving them stranded between two water courses.
Blue Mountains Police Rescue and NSW Special Operations Team paramedics walked in from the Marked Tree area and set up a roping system to help the women across. They were able to walk out and return to their car.
There is government assistance available to people affected by the floods. See https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/individuals/help-emergency.
