Thrive Services of Katoomba has continued to provide practical assistance to support the Blue Mountains community through the recent struggles with bushfires, COVID-19 and flooding.
But Angelique Sasagi, the chief executive officer, is worried with JobKeeper ending there will be even more need in the community.
"Numbers are increasing weekly .... and we suspect that with JobKeeper ending, this will only get worse and also there's the continuing cost of housing affordability and lack of rentals in the Mountains."
In the past year alone in the Mountains the service has supported 37 families with housing and homelessness issues, 26 families with "parenting and other family complexities", helped deliver 310 hampers, provided 30 clients with help for their utilities bill, given relief food cards to a further 85 clients and run a school literacy, a female drive program and a practical drop in support program three times a week.
The service has been fortunate to receive donations from local businesses, groups and community members that allow it to offer food hampers, bathroom products and winter woollens to those in need.
"And with limited resources and staffing we are fortunate enough to welcome volunteers to assist with our work," Ms Sasagi added.
Blue Mountains Grammar students Annabel Swan and Darcy Roberts have been volunteering as part of their Duke of Edinburgh award.
"The opportunity to assist these students like Annabel Swan and Darcy Roberts, who have volunteered with us for almost a year now, to gain their Duke of Edinburgh award has been a mutually beneficial experience as they give back so much to help support their community in return," Ms Sasagi said.
Thrive Services is a not for profit community organisation that supports children, families and others living in Blue Mountains and Lithgow areas. Thrive also provide family programs such as parenting and children's groups, case management, family support, school holiday and other services in the Blue Mountains and Lithgow. An upcoming family event is an Information and Kids Fun Day at 2 Station Street in Katoomba on Thursday, April 8 from 1-4pm.
"It is so rewarding to volunteer and give back to the community helping out with activities like the packing food parcels, homelessness packs, helping with activities like the upcoming school holiday fun day where we'll making pancakes and sharing information," said Darcy Roberts.
