Hales will enter Friday night's clash with the Melbourne Stars with 1474 runs to his name, with his 48 matches nine less than Wright's 57.
The Englishman's haul has also come at a record rate, with his strike-rate of 151.80 the highest of all players with at least 1000 runs to their name.
"It would be an awesome achievement and one I am really proud of," Hales said.
"It's a great memory to have in this country and a very proud achievement of mine.
"It was probably eight or nine years ago I got the chance to play for the Renegades.
"Any opportunity I get to come and play in Australia it means a hell of a lot.
"I'd snap someone's hands off to come and get here and play. It holds a lot of great memories and is close to my heart."
Hales first played for the Melbourne Renegades in 2012-13 before moving to the Adelaide Strikers and Hobart Hurricanes, before off-field issues took over.
He returned to Australia to play for the Thunder two seasons ago, making a statement as he took them to the finals last year.
Meanwhile, the Stars have confirmed one of the league's most explosive players in Andre Russell will be able to play on Friday night.
Russell had arrived in Australia for hotel quarantine on Tuesday, and will exit on Friday in time to play - in a big boost for the Stars after their unwanted record 152-run loss to Sydney Sixers on Sunday night.
"To have someone of Andre's quality play for the Melbourne Stars is a huge signing for our club," coach David Hussey said.
"We want our Stars family to watch the best players in action at the MCG and Andre is world class.
"I can't wait to work with him in the time that he's here and look forward to his debut on Friday night."
