She had left no personal belongings on the shore and after investigating, police could not identify the woman.
Almost 60 years later police released a photograph that was filed in 1966 with "no explanation as to where it came from, or how it is connected" with her body's discovery at Sorrento Back Beach in Victoria.
The photo had been taken in Italy and was dated April 10, 1961, according to Victoria Police.
Police are hoping it may "unravel the mystery".
A digitally generated image of the Jane Doe was released as part of the fresh appeal for public information.
She was 65 to 70-years-old, 164 centimetres tall with a slight build and a six-inch scar on her left leg.
Police said the woman had no teeth, grey hair, brown eyes with a blue colour around the iris.
She was wearing a string of pearls, a pink bra and corset, blue bloomers and nylon stockings.
Police are not certain she was living in the area, on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula at the time.
