Police lock down suburban streets to 'rattle' crime gangs

Detectives launched the neighbourhood-wide lockdown as part of Operation Talon to "disrupt and suppress" organised crime networks and outlaw motorcycle gangs.

"Our job isn't just reacting to crime after it happens but stopping it from happening before it has a chance to," Raptor Squad Commander detective superintendent Andrew Koutsoufis said.

"We do that through proactive operations like this; focusing on firearm compliance, vehicle searches, and talking directly to residents - who shouldn't have to feel threatened just by where they live," he said.

"A lockdown like this takes a double-barrelled approach; to both rattle the [organised crime network] associates, and to reassure the community we are listening, and we are there for them."

Detectives carried out compliance checks for two Firearm Prohibition Orders at a home in Drummoyne in Sydney's Inner West between 6pm and 8.30pm.

Officer canvassed neighbours, searched seven people and five cars and seized $30,000 in cash.

Police helicopters, the dog squad, traffic and highway patrol, water police and the state's Intelligence Command were among the officers executing the lockdowns.

Investigations under Operation Talon continue.
